## Frequently asked questions

### How do you get to the Reichenbach Falls?

Base town is Meiringen, one hour from Interlaken Ost or Lucerne on the Brünig line. From Meiringen station it is a 15-20 minute walk (or bus 171) to Willigen and the lower station of the Reichenbachfall funicular, which climbs to a terrace facing the main fall in about 10 minutes.

### When does the Reichenbach funicular run?

The historic 1899 funicular operates roughly from mid-May to early October, with departures every 10-15 minutes during the day. Outside the season the falls are still reachable on foot, but expect snow or ice on the upper path in winter and much less water in late autumn.

### Can you walk to the ledge where Holmes fought Moriarty?

Yes. From the funicular's upper station a maintained trail climbs about 20-30 minutes to the top of the fall; a side path leads toward the ledge Conan Doyle chose, marked with a white star on the rock face and a memorial plaque. The viewpoint is airy but secured; proper shoes are enough in summer.

### Is it worth visiting without caring about Sherlock Holmes?

Yes. The Reichenbach is one of the highest waterfall systems in the Alps, a 250-metre chain of seven cascades, and the wider Haslital packs the Aare Gorge and the Rosenlaui glacier gorge within a few kilometres. The Holmes story is a bonus layer, not the only reason to come.

### When is the best time to visit?

Late May and June give the most powerful water from snowmelt plus the full funicular season. For the Sherlock date, the fight with Moriarty happened on 4 May 1891, the society pilgrimage marks it each year, though in early May the funicular may not yet be running.
