The waterfall that killed Sherlock Holmes

On 4 May 1891, the world's greatest detective went over these falls locked in Moriarty's arms, and Victorian London wore black armbands for a fictional man. The Reichenbach is still exactly what Conan Doyle saw: 250 metres of water in seven leaps, a wooden funicular from 1899, and a ledge above the abyss marked with a single white star.

I THE SCENE OF THE CRIME

Seven cascades, one ledge, a white star on the rock

The Reichenbach drops roughly 250 metres in a chain of seven falls above Meiringen, and the Grand Fall alone, the one on every engraving since the Romantics, thunders 90 metres into a cauldron of spray. Turner painted it, Wordsworth climbed to it, and in 1893 Arthur Conan Doyle decided it was "a worthy tomb" for the hero he had grown to resent.

Everything is walkable from Meiringen station: the antique funicular creaks up to the viewing terrace, a trail continues to the fatal ledge, and the town below keeps a museum, a statue and a square named after a detective who never existed.

II THE CASE FILE

Three ways to work the case

The falls themselves are a half-day; the Haslital around them deserves more. Meiringen sits at the junction of three gorges and two Alpine passes, one rail hour from Interlaken, close enough for a detour, good enough for a base.

PLAN A · HALF DAY

The pilgrimage

FUNICULAR + LEDGE~3 H

Train to Meiringen, funicular up, 25 minutes to the star and plaque, back down past the lower falls, then the museum and statue in town. The complete Holmes circuit between morning and late lunch.

PLAN B · FULL DAY

Falls and gorge

+ AARE GORGE~6 H

Add the Aareschlucht: a kilometre-long slot canyon on walkways bolted to the rock, ten minutes from the falls' lower station. Walk its length to Innertkirchen and train back, the best one-day combination in the valley.

PLAN C · TWO DAYS

The full Haslital

+ ROSENLAUIOVERNIGHT

Sleep in Meiringen, then bus up the Reichenbach valley itself to the Rosenlaui glacier gorge and walk back down past the falls, the same road Holmes and Watson took toward their last conversation.

III HEADQUARTERS

Choose your base of operations

Meiringen puts the falls at walking distance and prices a notch below the famous resorts. Interlaken is the regional hub with the lakes; Grindelwald adds the Eiger to your breakfast window. All three link by direct train.

IV THE JOURNAL

Field notes from the Haslital

Practical pieces written like case notes: timetables checked, paths walked, prices in francs. New entries appear here twice a week.

V ELEMENTARY QUESTIONS
How do you get to the Reichenbach Falls?

Base yourself on Meiringen, one hour from Interlaken Ost or Lucerne on the Brünig line. From the station, walk 15-20 minutes (or bus 171) across the Aare to Willigen and the funicular's lower station. By car, there is parking at the funicular.

When does the funicular run, and what does it cost?

Mid-May to early October, every 10-15 minutes through the day; the return trip costs about 12 francs, with Swiss Travel Pass and half-fare discounts. The ride up takes ten minutes in open wooden carriages from 1899.

Can you walk to the exact ledge from the story?

Yes, from the upper terrace a trail climbs 20-30 minutes to the top of the fall, and a marked side path reaches the ledge Conan Doyle picked, signed with a white star painted on the rock and a bronze plaque. Decent shoes are all you need in season.

Is it worth it if you don't care about Sherlock Holmes?

Entirely. This is one of the great waterfall systems of the Alps in a valley that also hides the Aare Gorge and the Rosenlaui glacier gorge. The detective is the garnish, not the dish.

When is the best time to come?

Late May and June for maximum snowmelt water with the funicular running. The Sherlockian date is 4 May 1891, the fight in "The Final Problem", commemorated yearly, though early May can precede the funicular season.
